Toyota
The 2022 Toyota Tundra trades its V-8 for a turbocharged V-6, gets coil-spring rear suspension, and a much-upgraded interior. There’s even a hybrid, though Toyota is too insecure to call it that.

Toyota calls the Tundra’s V-6 a 3.5-liter, but that’s part of the long tradition of fanciful rounding that gave us the Fox-body Mustang 5.0 and more recent Mercedes 6.3s. It’s a 3.4-liter.

The V-6 makes 389 horsepower in all trims except the base SR, where it’s rated at 348 horsepower. The “i-Force MAX” (read: hybrid) makes 437 horsepower.

The turbos enable big torque: 405 pound-feet in the SR, 479 pound-feet in other nonhybrid trims, and a massive 583 pound-feet in the hybrid.

Positioned between the engine and transmission, the 48-hp electric motor is paired with a small battery mounted under the rear seat.

The Tundra gets an optional electronically locking rear differential for the first time. The standard open rear diff and lack of all-wheel drive mean big burnouts are only a stab of the throttle away.

The interior is much more modern, with an optional 14.0-inch infotainment screen. There’s no tuner knob, but the rear window still rolls down.

The bed is composite, and buyers can now pair a 6.5-foot bed with the crew cab. (Other lengths are 5.5 feet and 8.0 feet.) Dealers will still sell you a bedliner.

A TRD Off-Road package can give the SR5 some of the TRD Pro model’s hardware, most notably the locking diff. The TRD Pro is now hybrid-only.

A coil-spring rear end gives the new Tundra better body control over rough pavement. Optional rear air springs can serve for automatic load-leveling or be manually raised or lowered.

Toyota still hasn’t released pricing, but we’d expect it to be as ruthlessly benchmarked against the competition as the rest of the truck is.
