Racing has never been a huge thing for Lamborghini, which partially explains why the 2021 Huracán STO (Super Trofeo Omologata) is arriving a bit late to the street-legal, track-focused supercar scene. But with less weight, increased downforce, and a range of racing-inspired components, it makes quite an impression.

The Huracán STO is Lamborghini’s first track-focused road car, intended to rival cars such as the Ferrari 488 Pista, McLaren 765LT, and Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

STO stands for Super Trofeo Omologata; it is essentially a homologated, road-legal version of Lamborghini’s Huracán Super Trofeo Evo and GTS Evo race cars.

Power comes from the Huracán’s familiar naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10, which makes the same 631 horsepower as the Huracán Performante but with sharper throttle response.

Unlike most of its all-wheel-drive siblings, the Huracán STO is rear-wheel drive. Lamborghini claims it weighs 95 pounds less than the 3429-pound Performante.

Additional weight-saving measures include mostly carbon-fiber bodywork, including a one-piece front clamshell, plus a stripped-out cabin and thinner windshield glass.

The STO ditches the regular Huracán’s active aerodynamics in favor of a huge rear wing with three manually adjustable positions, the most aggressive of which is said to produce 925 pounds of downforce at 174 mph.

The STO has both a limited-slip differential and rear-axle steering, both of which can be felt working in tighter corners to keep the car on-line.

Near-motorsports-grade Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes come as standard on the STO. Buyers also will be able to choose between two new model-specific Bridgestone Potenza tires in Cup and Race compounds, the latter being close to street-legal slicks.

Lamborghini won’t limit the STO’s production run, but it says that the first year’s allotment of around 1500 cars has already been sold.

Despite being faster than the Huracán Performante around almost any racetrack, Lamborghini says it doesn’t plan to attempt a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record with the STO, as the gap in power to the car’s turbocharged rivals is too great.
